Spring Daisies: East County

Following spring rains, yellow daisies come out in abundance, brightening the countryside and lifting the spirit.

East County Vistas

One of the reasons I love the San Diego area is the surrouding countryside. East County is my favorite region to visit and photograph. Here is a series of images that accurately portray the summer countryside 30-45 miles east of Downtown San Diego. In the fourth image, one can see the wind moving the wild oats, while the background remains in sharp focus.

Geometry in Black and White

The hand of man, when superimposed upon nature's creations, results in form-constrained-by-geometry readily seen against the apparent background of natural chaotic structure. Here, in these three black and white compositions, taken on Mount Laguna 45 miles east of San Diego, one can easily discern human created form-as-function amidst the fractal beauty of nature.

Sunset Filigree

I love this image, taken from East County looking west toward the city and ocean beyond, because it captures the beauty, balance and delicacy often found in nature. The tree limb in the foreground is both tack sharp and positioned so that the lower portion is pointing directly at the setting sun, which is the subject of the composition. It has become a favorite of viewers, as well.

East County Eucalyptus

Imported years ago from Australia as agricultural windbreaks, the Eucalyptus tree has flourished in the San Diego area, often growing wild where once it was only domesticated. Here we see the Eucalyptus framing four views of East County mountains at dusk. The first two images are looking south; the second image is looking north; and the fourth image is looking west toward the Pacific.

Fishing on Golden Pond

A golden sunset casts its warm glow on the water of Lake Murray in East County as two friends are seen fishing during the waning hours of a summer's day.

I like this piece not only for its simplicity of subject but the complexity of the veritcal texture and repeating pattern.

Progression of a Sunset: East County

One of my favorite activities is to photograph a stunning sunset as it progresses over time. I love the subtle changes in color and tone, which may occur within minutes of each other. Notice the progressions from brown-gold to blue-pink to orange-red. San Diego's East County has elevated areas that offer excellent view points for taking photos such as these. In this series the images are enhanced by the tack sharp silhouette of the leafless desiduous tree in the foreground.
